Ripped: T-Shirts from the Underground

Ripped: T-Shirts from the Underground

A visual history of counterculture music T-shirts, spanning the defining era of indie music. Ripped is the first book to document the shirts of the post-punk and indie period, after the submission of 1960s rock ‘n’ roll to mass popularity and before the onset of ironic consumerism. Carefully selected from the archives of vintage fashion collector Cesar Padilla, the 200 T-shirts in this book are classic examples of rare and extremely limited shirts created by and for the very bands who embodied the true essence of the DIY and indie movements—from The Ramones to Sonic Youth, John Cale, Talking Heads, Madonna, X, Pil, The Germs, and many others. Each shirt has been photographed in all its gritty, sweat-stained glory just as it was found—on the street, in a thrift store, or inherited from a friend. Introduced by Lydia Lunch, the book includes recollections and ruminations from musicians, fashion designers, and pop culture personalities on the enigmatic and enduring appeal of the rock band T-shirt.

I think this came out better than the previous modeling attempt, but I still could do better. This was also snapped (hastily, as my camera batteries were about to die) for use in my design portfolio.

I got my start with traditional graphic design (as opposed to website design, which was what I'd mainly done up until then) by creating t-shirt designs for Georgia Tech's orchestra from 2001 onwards, and designed about 5 shirts throughout the years. (My very first design appeared on national TV, when our friend Will appeared on the casting call episode of season 2 of Beauty and the Geek!)

This was the design I created for fall 2004, my graduating semester. If you'll allow me a moment of vanity, this shirt was popular enough that a number of non-orchestra people started asking GTSO people how they could get their own, and years later, I still get a lot of compliments on it!

(Normally I don't look this surly...but I snapped this photo at a truly ungodly hour. It was a long, panicked night of hasty designing and collating of grad school application materials that I thought would only take ~2 hours to do but took closer to 8 instead.)

Abercrombie V T-shirt

Abercrombie V T-shirt

This is a more recent example of a V in a t shirt. The V is smallish in size, but is still substantial. Unlike cheaper shirt, the V is actually cut out and sewn back in with either the same or different material. It also shows the criss cross pattern which has become popular. This shirt is from abercrombie kids, which has been using Vs more and more recently. I find the design of their shirts compared to Abercrombie is superior. The have cleaner lines and look less vintage and worn. They also make a great shape in their Vs with no curvy lines or odd angles you might find with a cheaper brand.

Sweet Valley High - The Complete First Season

More Beverly Hills 90210 than Freaks and Geeks, Sweet Valley High looks at the lives and loves of the popular kids rather than the outcasts. Cynthia and Brittany Daniel star as twins Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield in the television version of Francine Pascal's best selling book series. With their seemingly perfect Southern California lives, Liz and Jess are more Betty and Veronica, from the Archie comics, than the high school girls of any other TV series. In other words, Sweet Valley Highis escapism, pure and simple--and what's wrong with a little escapism? While both girls are part of the in-crowd, there are differences between them. Liz, a reporter for the school newspaper, is the good one, while Jess, a cheerleader, is the not-so-good one.
Created by Josh Goldstein (American Dreams), The Complete First Season includes all 22 episodes broadcast between 1994-1995. Supporting characters include Liz's boyfriend Todd (Ryan James Bittle) and best friend Enid (Amy Danles) and Jess's best friends Lila (Bridget Flanery) and Patty (Amarilis). Rich kid Bruce (Brock Burnett), his pal Manny (Harley Rodriguez), token nerd Winston "Eggman" Egbert (Michael Perl), and a few teachers--but no parents--round out the cast. Most of the conflicts the girls face are created by devious, self-centered Jess, who pretends to be her sister whenever Liz has something she wants, like a potential college boyfriend ("Dangerous Love"), a broadcasting gig ("Oracle on Air"), or praise from the hot poetry teacher ("Poetic Injustice"). Sweet Valley High ran on FOX for three seasons, followed by a fourth and final season on UPN. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
